
Iran’s president said on Tuesday that he has instructed his foreign minister to pursue “fair and just negotiations” with the US.
According to reports, both countries are preparing to send top envoys to Istanbul this weekend for crucial talks on the Iranian nuclear program.
President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a post: “I have instructed my foreign minister that if the appropriate environment exists—free from threats and unreasonable expectations—fair and just negotiations guided by the principles of dignity, prudence, and pragmatism should be held.”Amid the buildup of US warships and aircraft in the region for a possible attack on Iran, the country’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, hinted that talks could take place soon. Donald Trump said on Saturday that the Iranians are “seriously negotiating with us” and hinted at an agreement to avert military strikes on Tehran.When asked about the possibility of a deal on Monday, Trump told reporters at the White House that talks were ongoing. “Our major ships are currently headed to Iran—the largest and best ships—and we are in talks with Iran. We’ll see what comes of it… If we can find a solution, it will be very good, and if not, it could be very bad.”During a visit to the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Araghchi said: “[Iran’s enemies] are talking about diplomacy today, while Iran has always been ready for this option, provided mutual respect and interests are respected.”Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected to visit the region and hold talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel.
